“CONNECTION FAILED, with a specially composed sound score by James Bulley, is a remarkable and original work. Set in a high street launderette, the action, played with detailed realism, involves the interaction between three European ethnic groups who meet over soap powder, dirty laundry and banality. Under the apparently uneventful lurks small intense dramas of territory and prejudice, a verbal subtext score that seeps through the soundtrack. The audience sit very close to the action, observing its minutiae through headphones - a technique that both amplifies and concentrates the sound down so that a voyeuristic and extremely intimate relationship between performers and spectators is achieved. The whole feels like a movie, radio play and live performance rolled into one, and Bulley's score is meticulous and perfectly judged. ” [Anna Furse, Director of MA Performance Making, Goldsmiths College]
